Overview
This busy station right in the heart of Cardiff was first opened in 1840 and had its first major redevelopment in 1973. Initially redesigning the entire roof, reducing the platforms from five to three, and the installation of lifts between the platforms. In the following decades numerous other improvements were carried out, culminating in a £220 million regeneration scheme for both the station and surrounding area in 2013. The facade and station entrance were rebuilt using a contemporary wood, steel, and glass design, and the platforms increased back up to five, allowing more services per hour to run.
A plaque was displayed in the ticket hall in 2016, listing those from the Taff Vale Railway, the company that first developed the station in 1840, who served in the armed forces between the years of 1914 and 1919. In 2017, in order to provide more information about these young men, a QR code was added.
Cardiff Queen Street Station is also famous, having featured in the BBC Dr. Who spinoff Torchwood, so that might be an interesting place to visit on your next holiday.
