- Overview
-
Originally built as two stations, both opening in 1840, the two were amalgamated eight years later to serve the city of Chester and the surrounding areas. Constructed from the iconic rich blue Staffordshire stone and warm grey Storeton sandstone, and designed in an ornate style modelled on Italian classical architecture, Chester station is situated adjacent to the impressive city walls.
Make sure to take a look at the vast wooden beams above Platform 4, royal sculptor John Thomas carved several beautiful owls; originally designed to prevent pigeons from nesting, they are a much-loved feature of the station. Popular with shopaholics, Brook Street lies right on the station’s doorstep, and just beyond that, the city centre, overlooked by the magnificent cathedral.
