  • Overview
    • Serving the Cheshire town of Crewe, the station, which opened in 1837, was of major importance in its day. Home of the Grand Junction Railway engineering works, the town was developed to house the incoming workers. Unusually, then, the town was named after the station and not vice versa, as is the standard practice.

One of the largest stations outside a major city, Crewe Station has 12 platforms and deals with nearly three and a half million passengers annually. Being such an important station, it’s no surprise that there have been numerous rebuilds, but the 1867 design made the biggest impression from a design perspective and in 2016, the well-preserved buildings were granted Grade II listed status. English Heritage have described them as “one of the best pieces of mid-19 century station architecture designed anywhere on the London and North West Railway”.
