A great starting point is Cardiff Castle right in the heart of the city. Standing for over 2,000 years, and built on the site of an old Roman fort, the motte and bailey keep has seen many bloody battles and survived long drawn out sieges. Transformed by Victorian Gothic additions in the 1800s, it has an imposing edifice staring out over Cardiff. Rumoured to be haunted, spooky ghost tours allow you to sample the after-dark atmosphere, and see the castle in a different light!
If you survive the spectres, head for the upmarket Cardiff Bay. The stylish regenerated waterside area is home to some of Cardiff’s most iconic buildings and is a lovely area to explore. The Millennium Centre is the capital’s home of the performing arts, and has a full year-round programme of West End musicals, opera, and contemporary dance. There’s something to suit every taste, from stand up comedy to workshops, and all are welcome!
Still in the Bay area, for adrenaline seekers Cardiff International White Water offers a mix of exciting water sports, including white water rafting, kayaking, and hotdogging - riding the rapids in a two-man canoe!
Back in the city centre, the Principality Stadium is a must-visit if you’re a sports fan. Hosting international sporting events, including rugby and motorsports, you can also catch music concerts here, and take one of the stadium tours.
Visit the Queen’s Arcade for a spot of retail therapy. This light and airy shopping centre houses all the high street names, alongside designer exclusives, but if you fancy something a little different, head away from the main shopping hub, to the quaint Victorian arcades. With their curved wrought iron gates and original glass roofs, they are packed with boutique treasures, hand made crafts and delicious homemade treats. We dare you not to come away with bags bulging!
