Most know Bristol as the home of Banksy, the infamous street artist with a unique take on every controversial topic, and there are many of his pieces dotted around the city, but if classical art is more your thing, the many galleries and exhibitions will keep you busy. Featuring great masters through to modern sculptures, textiles and film, it’s no wonder that after research by the hotel chain Premier Inn, Bristol has been named the most artistic city in the UK.
Internationally recognised for its many successful conservation breeding programmes, Bristol Zoo is well worth a visit. Watch the gorillas on their island, meet the meerkats, or use the rope walkways to copy the monkeys. You can play your part, too, by adopting one of the zoo’s animals, helping to conserve your favourite species.
Founded in 1140, Bristol Cathedral’s glorious medieval stonework and inspiring Gothic towers look out over a city that has grown around it. The stunning rose window above the West porch survived the heavy bombing sustained by Bristol in World War II, and now welcomes visitors from around the globe.
With boutique arcades selling unique creations, and bright, busy shopping centres packed with the high street names, retail addicts are amply catered for. Food fans, too, are spoiled for choice. Artisan bakers, chocolatiers and secluded coffee houses all add to Bristol’s appeal.
